The M24 Chaffee, widely considered the top light tank of World War II, was a swift, lightly armored vehicle boasting a powerful 75 mm M6 gun for direct fire. Produced by Cadillac and Massey-Harris from 1943 to 1945, over 4,000 units were manufactured. Arriving in Europe late 1944, they demonstrated exceptional effectiveness and reliability. However, during the Korean War, American forces equipped with M24 Chaffees struggled against enemy T-34/85s, leading to reinforcements with M26 Pershings, M46 Patrons, and M4A3E8 Shermans. The Chaffee remained in U.S. service until 1953, succeeded by the M41 Bulldog. Post-1945, many American allies employed the M24 Chaffee, including the French army in Indo-China, notably at the battle of Dien Bien Phu. Despite being outdated by the mid-1960s, it continues to serve in some client nations.
