The extensive burrow system of the Marmot consists of escape tunnels and a separate permanent burrow. Not every burrow is finished and used. It can therefore often be difficult to differentiate these from each other, because there are also Dead-end passages or "toilets." the passages can reach a length of 10 to 70 meters. Marmots leave their burrow by day and are mainly active on the ground. They primarily feed on grasses and herbs, with fruits, seeds and insects being a less important part of the diet. The Marmot genus consists of 14 species. Marmots are essentially dwellers of cold steppes. Our Alpine Marmot, which today lives in mountainous regions beyond the tree line, was found only in the European lowlands during the ice ages. With the end of the ice age, the only suitable habitat was the high Alpine locations in the Alps.
