Grimmelshausen was born at Gelnhausen. At the age of ten, he was kidnapped by Hessian soldiers, and in their midst experienced military life in the Thirty Years' War. In 1639, he became a regular soldier in the Imperial Army. At the latest, in the year 1644 he worked as a writer in a regiment's chancellery—from that year on documents by Hans Jakob Christoffel exist. At the close of the war, Grimmelshausen entered the service of Franz Egon von Fürstenberg, bishop of Strasbourg. In 1665, he was made magistrate (German: Schultheiß) at Renchen in Baden. • The 5 Deutsche Mark coin, minted by the Federal Republic of Germany from 1951 to 1974, is a unique and historically significant piece that reflects post-war German resilience and unity. Its composition, 62.5% silver and 37.5% copper, gives the coin a solid weight of 11.2 grams, a diameter of 29 mm, and a thickness of 2.07 mm. Designed with a milled edge and medal alignment, this coin captures Germany’s classic, meticulous design philosophy, balancing elegance with durability and reflecting the economic strength of the Deutsche Mark during this era.
  • The obverse showcases a stylized eagle facing left, a powerful symbol of Germany’s national identity. Designed by Albert Holl, the eagle—a heraldic emblem used in German iconography for centuries—represents strength, freedom, and sovereignty. Holl’s interpretation features a clean, minimalistic design that captures the post-war spirit of Germany, balancing modernism with a strong connection to the country's heritage. This emblem serves as a reminder of the nation's unity in rebuilding and renewing its identity after challenging times.
  • On the reverse, the coin features the denomination "5 Deutsche Mark," along with the mintmark below the date, indicating the specific mint of origin. Each mintmark, such as "D," "F," "G," or "J," represents a particular mint across Germany: Munich, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, or Hamburg, respectively. This distinction allows collectors to trace the origins of individual coins and adds historical depth to each piece. The inscription "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND" further solidifies the coin's identity as a national emblem of the Federal Republic of Germany.
  • The coin's smooth edge bears Germany's motto, “EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT” (“Unity and Justice and Freedom”), reflecting the core values of the nation. This inscription adds a subtle yet meaningful detail, connecting the piece with Germany’s democratic ideals. The 5 Deutsche Mark coin also exists in two variations, with differences in lettering thickness and star design next to the date. These subtle design distinctions, known as Types A (thin legend) and B (thick legend), offer nuanced variety, appealing to collectors interested in Germany’s rich numismatic history.
